Pink Ribbons, Inc.

In the last decade, the fight against breast cancer has commercially skyrocketed. Commercially. In the United States, someone is diagnosed with breast cancer every 23 seconds, and every 69 seconds, a person dies due to the disease (via Your Call). Pink Ribbons, Inc. is a documentary that deals with the ever-growing popularity of the “pink ribbon” and the stories and controversies behind it. The film is based on the book Pink Ribbons, Inc: Breast Cancer and the Politics of Philanthropy, by Queen’s Unviersity professor Samantha King.

The film synopsis states :

“the campaign obscures the reality and facts of breast cancer – more and more women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year, and face the same treatment options they did 40 years ago. Yet women are also the most influential market group, buying 80 percent of consumer products and making most major household purchasing decisions. So then who really benefits from the pink ribbon campaigns — the cause or the company? And what if the very companies and products that profit from their association have actually contributed to the problem?”

Today on KALW, San Francisco’s NPR network, the program Your Call addressed the film and its message, while speaking with guests Samantha King and producer of the film, Ravida Din. They welcomed callers who had donated to these organizations, participated in the walks and runs, as well as breast cancer survivors.
