Historic Occasion Caught On Film

This month we witnessed a significant event in history: the independence of a new nation. On July 9, South Sudan officially gained its independence and thanks to filmmaker Jason Byrne, this historic occasion has been captured forever on film.

Rather than cover the story as a news article, as countless journalists were already doing, Byrne chose to make a film about the event. He had two actors represent the people of North Sudan and South Sudan. Each tells their accounts of the civil war, final independence and what that means to them.

Byrne’s focus was not on archiving the events that he saw. Instead, he focused on capturing the spirit and energy that was present in the people of South Sudan, which he hopes, and believes, his film reflects honestly.
